Breaking Down

I Prevail – Breaking Down

I think I think too much,
I’m a little bit paranoid, I think I’m breaking,
Maybe it’s in my blood,
Got a pain that I can’t avoid, I think I’m breaking down.

Hate every single second, minute, hour, every day,
Person in the mirror, they won’t let me feel a thing,
Keep me focused on my problems, I’m addicted to the pain,
Everybody’s out to get you.

I guess I never noticed how it came creeping in,
My enemy emotion but I can’t sink or swim,
I say I’m feeling hopeless, they give me medicine,
They give me medicine, they give me medicine!

I think I think too much,
I’m a little bit paranoid, I think I’m breaking,
Maybe it’s in my blood,
Got a pain that I can’t avoid, I think I’m breaking.

Down, I think I’m breaking,
Down, I think I’m breaking,
I think I think too much,
I’m a little bit paranoid, I think I’m breaking down.

Lies, every time they ask me I just tell ’em that I’m fine,
Try to hide my demons but they only multiply.
Keep me running from the voices on repeat inside my mind,
Everybody fucking hates you.

I guess I never noticed how it came creeping in,
My enemy emotion but I can’t sink or swim,
I say I’m feeling hopeless but no one’s listening,
But no one’s listening, but no one’s listening!

I think I think too much,
I’m a little bit paranoid, I think I’m breaking,
Maybe it’s in my blood,
Got a pain that I can’t avoid, I think I’m breaking.

Down, I think I’m breaking,
Down, I think I’m breaking,
I think I think too much,
I’m a little bit paranoid, I think I’m breaking down.

I don’t really like myself,
I don’t really like myself,
I don’t really like myself,
I don’t really like myself,
I think I’m breaking down.

Sappy

Nirvana – Sappy

And if you save yourself, you will make him happy.
He’ll keep you in a jar, then you’ll think you’re happy.
He’ll give you breathing holes, then you’ll think you’re happy.
He’ll cover you with grass, then you’ll think you’re happy.

Now,
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
Conclusion came to you.

And if you cut yourself, you will think you’re happy.
He’ll keep you in a jar, then you’ll make him happy.
He’ll give you breathing holes, then you’ll think you’re happy.
He’ll cover you with grass, then you’ll think you’re happy.

Now,
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
Conclusion came to you.

You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
Conclusion came to you.

And if you fool yourself, you will make him happy.
He’ll keep you in a jar, then you’ll think you’re happy.
He’ll give you breathing holes, then you will seem happy.
You’ll wallow in your shit, then you’ll think you’re happy.

Now,
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
Conclusion came to you.

Alternate Version – “Sad”

And if you say your prayers,
You will make God happy.
And if you do what’s true,
You will make me happy.
I’ll keep you in a jar,
And you will seem happy.
I’ll give you breathing holes,
You will think you’re happy, now.

You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.

And if you save yourself,
You will make him happy.
He’ll bring you fine rewards,
Then you will feel happy.
I’ll keep you in my room,
I’m sure you’ll be happy.
And if you save your soul,
You will think you’re happy now.

You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.
You’re in a laundry room.

Word Up

Korn – Word Up

Yo, pretty ladies around the world,
Got a weird thing to show you,
So tell all the boys and girls.
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma, too.
We’re about to go down,
And you know just what to do.

Wave your hands in the air like you don’t care,
Glide by the people as they start to look and stare.
Do your dance, do your dance, do your dance quick, mama.
Come on baby, tell me what’s the word?

Word up, (up up) everybody say,
When you hear the call, you’ve got to get it on the way.
Word up, (up up) it’s the code word,
No matter where you say it, you know that you’ll be heard.

Now all you sucker DJ’s who think you’re fly,
There’s got to be a reason and we know the reason why.
You try to put on those airs and act real cool,
But you got to realize that you’re acting like fools.

If there’s music we can use it,
Be free to dance.
We don’t have the time for psychological romance.
No romance, no romance, no romance for me, mama.
Come on baby, tell me what’s the word?

Word up, (up up) everybody say,
When you hear the call, you’ve got to get it on the way.
Word up, (up up) it’s the code word,
No matter where you say it, you know that you’ll be heard.

Lifelines

I Prevail – Lifelines

When I open my eyes and see the lines that live on the life I left behind,
I feel disconnected from the place that I call home.
When I try to rewind I can’t design a way to go back to that place and time.
I remember that moment that changed everything I know.
Everything I know.

Cut up into pieces, looking for a reason.
Who’s gonna be there to make me whole?
I can’t stop the bleeding,
Looking for a meaning,
Throw me a line and bring me back home.
Won’t you say something, say something?
I can’t do this alone.
Cut up into pieces, looking for a reason,
Throw me a line and bring me back home.

I live with all the goodbyes, doesn’t matter how hard I try!
They end in long nights spent up looking back on my life!
I feel disconnected from the place that I call home.
They hit me from the blind side, caught me in the blink of an eye!
Just like a landmine going off inside my mind!
I remember the moment that changed everything I know.

This life can cut like a knife!
It leaves lines and divides!
This life can cut like a knife!
It leaves lines that divide a before and an after!

Cut up into pieces, looking for a reason.
Who’s gonna be there to make me whole?
I can’t stop the bleeding,
Looking for a meaning,
Throw me a line and bring me back home.
Won’t you say something, say something now?
I can’t do this alone!
Cut up into pieces, looking for a reason,
Throw me a line and bring me back home.

When I open my eyes and see the lines,
I see the lines.
Now they live on the life I left behind,
I see the lines.

Fade In / Fade Out

Nothing More – Fade In / Fade Out

Just the other day I looked at my father.
It was the first time I saw he’d grown old.
Canyons through his skin and the rivers that made them,
Carve the stories I was told.

He said, “Son,
I have watched you fade in.
You will watch me fade out.
When the grip leaves my hand,
I know you won’t let me down.

Go and find your way.
Leave me in your wake.
Always push through the pain.
And don’t run away from change.
Never settle, make your mark.
Hold your head up, follow your heart.
Follow your heart.

Just the other day I stared at the ocean.
With every new wave, another must go.
One day you’ll remember us laughing.
One day you’ll remember my passion.
One day you’ll have one of your own.

I say, “Son,
I have watched you fade in.

We all get lost sometimes, trying to find what we’re looking for

I have watched you fade in.
You will watch me fade out.

When the morning comes and takes me,
I promise I have taught you everything that you need.
In the night you’ll dream of so many things,
But find the ones that bring you life.
And you’ll find me.
That’s where you’ll find me.

Don’t Stop Dancing

Creed – Don’t Stop Dancing

At times life is wicked and I just can’t see the light.
A silver lining sometimes isn’t enough,
To make some wrongs seem right.
Whatever life brings,
I’ve been through everything,
And now I’m on my knees again.

But I know I must go on,
Although I hurt I must be strong,
Because inside I know that many feel this way.

Children don’t stop dancing,
Believe you can fly,
Away… away.

At times life’s unfair and you know it’s plain to see.
Hey God, I know I’m just a dot in this world,
Have you forgot about me?
Whatever life brings,
I’ve been through everything,
And now I’m on my knees again.

But I know I must go on,
Although I hurt I must be strong,
Because inside I know that many feel this way.

Am I hiding in the shadows?
Forget the pain and forget the sorrows.

Am I hiding in the shadows?
Forget the pain and forget the sorrows.

But I know I must go on,
Although I hurt I must be strong,
Because inside I know that many feel this way.

Am I hiding in the shadows?
Are we hiding in the shadows?

Gone Away

This one goes out to Jordan O’Connors, a great friend of mine since childhood, who I lost last summer. It’s hard to miss a day without thinking about him or grabbing my phone to call him before realizing that he’s gone away. Jordan was possibly the only person that could understand and empathize with the core of my being. We shared a type of platonic, brotherly love and a love of philosophical inquiry. It’s a novel and difficult feeling when you come to understand that part of yourself can die while you are still living. Having been raised to believe in eternal life, the reality of death just seems to make of life an absurdity. This song is a cover of The Offspring’s song of the same name (1997) and Five Finger Death Punch’s efforts to publicize the atrocities and grievances of war are to be admired.

Gone Away

Maybe in another life
I could find you there
Pulled away before your time
I can’t deal, it’s so unfair

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it feels
Yeah, it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you’ve gone away

Leaving flowers on your grave
Show that I still care
Black roses and Hail Marys
I can’t bring back what’s taken from me

I reach to the sky
And call out your name
Oh please let me trade
I would

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it stings
Yeah, it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you’ve gone away
Gone away
Gone away
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Ooh, yeah ooh ooh

I reach to the sky
And call out your name
Oh please let me trade
I would

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven is so far away

And it feels
Yeah it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it stings
Yeah, it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you’ve gone away
Gone away
Gone away
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Ooh, yeah ooh ooh
Yeah ooh, yeah ooh ooh

And it feels
And it feels like
The world is so cold
Now that you’ve gone away

Disillusioned

A Perfect Circle – Disillusioned

(Dopamine, on dopamine…)

We have been overrun by our animal desire
Addicts of the immediate keep us obedient and unaware
Feeding this mutation, this Pavlovian despair

We’ve become disillusioned
So we run towards anything glimmering

Time to put the silicon obsession down
Take a look around, find a way in the silence
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an island

Unique voice among the many in this choir
Tuning into each other, lift all higher

(Dopamine, on dopamine…)

Willingly been re-wired by clever agents within
Looping our reflections, our obsessions draw us in
Fix and fixation, no sentience beyond

We’ve become disillusioned
So we dive like crows towards anything glittering

Time to put the silicon obsession down
Take a look around, find a way in the silence
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an island

Unique voice among the many in this choir
Tuning into each other, lift all higher

Lateralus

Tool – Lateralus

Black then white are all I see
In my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
Reaching out to me,
Lets me see.

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine.
Drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see
In my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
Reaching out to me.
Lets me see

There is so much more
And beckons me
To look through to these
Infinite possibilities.

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine.
Drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired, to fathom the power,
To witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral,

To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.

I’m reaching up and reaching out.
I’m reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me.
Whatever will bewilder me.

And following our will and wind
We may just go where no one’s been.
We’ll ride the spiral to the end
And may just go where no one’s been.

Spiral out. Keep going.

Parabola

Tool – Parabola

So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide-eyed and hopeful.
Wide-eyed and hopefully wild.

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment
We are choosing to be here right now
Hold on, stay inside…

This body, holding me,
Reminding me that I am not alone.
This body, makes me feel eternal,
All this pain is an illusion.

This holy reality, this holy experience
Choosing to be here in…
This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in…
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion

Alive!

In this holy reality, in this holy experience
Choosing to be here in…
This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in…
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion

Twirling round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving round each new experience
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing
A chance to be alive and breathing

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality
Embrace this moment, remember, we are eternal
All this pain is an illusion
